Secrets Behind Success

–Book Review of The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

When we learn about American history, we learn about the Declaration of Independence. When we learn about the Declaration of Independence, we learn about Benjamin Franklin. He was one of those men who drafted the document and changed America’s history forever. However, he was not this simple.

Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was a scientist, a social activist, a businessman, a diplomat, a thinker and an author. Most importantly, he was a very successful man. People may wonder how a person could become successful in so many different fields in merely 84 years. The answers to this question are revealed in this book. After reading his autobiography, not only did I obtain a brief understanding of his life, but also did I learn a great deal about secrets to success. From the way he dealt with relationships and difficulties, and from the way he contemplated about life, I obtained insights into why this man is admired by all.

Franklin was a book lover. From a very young age on, he has fallen in love with books. However, he was born in an impoverished family and had several siblings, so he wasn’t able to buy books as his will. As a consequence, he worked for printing houses, and bought books using the money he earned. From the things he learned in the books, he began to think, which helped him make friends. Reading has changed his life forever. It made it possible for him to write proses and poems, to establish the Philadelphia library, to establish the university that later became the University of Pennsylvania. As the saying goes, reading makes a full man. Our souls can be purified, and our minds can be enlightened by reading, and this is the first key to success.

Franklin thinks all the time: about what he wants, what he should do, his budgets, his future, his dreams and aspirations. When he encountered a failure or any setback in life, he would retrospect and make plans for the future. There’s one typical chapter in the autobiography about his moral superiority:Plan for Attaining Moral Perfection. He regulated himself with thirteen virtues: Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity,Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Chastity, and Humility. He made a pamphlet in which he “allotted a page for each of the virtues”. He remembers that he would rule “each page with red ink, so as to have seven columns, one for each day of the week, marking each column with a letter for the day… respecting the virtue upon the day”. He applied these virtues in his every day life and slowly became the definition of these qualities.

Franklin is often described as industrious, temperate and ambitious. Industrious goes first, because during his entire life, Franklin had always been very hardworking. As a young printer, he worked hard to learn; as a scientist, he tried the experiments over and over and never gave up. He concluded in the book that he was more hard working than most people, which greatly contributed to his success. Every single person has to work hard no matter how intelligent he or she is, and industry is definitely the key to success.

Besides being a reader, a thinker and a hard worker, Franklin is also known for his generosity and kind heart. Benjamin Franklin was a very generous man, which derived from his open-mindedness and altruistic spirits. He always thought for other people and for the society, which explains his active involvements in political summits and movements. He spent a lot of his time and energy on public services, and he changed Philadelphia and Pennsylvania into  prosperous and beautiful places. Aside of being successful, it is always important to be kind and care for others.

Benjamin Franklin has done so many great things in his life, which has made him very admirable. From his real stories and experiences, people can learn that to be successful , they need to read, to think and work hard. This book means a lot to me, and Franklin would always be my role model to follow.

Revision comments:

I didn’t make that much revision as I liked the structure of this review even though it was written two years ago. However, for a book review, I think I should have focused more on the book instead of on the person. What I learned freshmen year still applied to this revision. Such skills include evidence weaving, thesis writing and basic punctuation.
